Our Inherent Rights?
In no way, is this blog meant to invite conversations of morals, ethics, politics, religion or any other of the taboo topics in American society today. This blog is merely an opportunity to explore new insights and happenings in the world we live in…the world of advertising.
Greg Fultz, of Alamogordo, New Mexico used a billboard advertising space, to convey is feelings of betrayal and anger towards an ex-girlfriend, and her choice (apparently her sole choice) to have an abortion. Again, I don’t even want to talk about right versus wrong, the choice of that women, or frankly, the choice of Mr. Fultz to organize is piece (while as you can see, more than likely seeking sponsors to assist him i.e. Right to Life). You have your own moral ethics and code of contact to make a determination of your feelings about this, and I’m not here to preach what mine are So, for the sake of argument, I’ll leave my belief system out of it
But, it brings to light an interesting issue…the right to freedom of speech, and the right to privacy. Both are constant conversations in the advertising world…again, a debate of right versus wrong, and what can and should be allowed. Privacy is a huge issue that has debaters all over the world, with the now dominance of social media. We argue and will fight for their right to privacy, but will blast intimate information, photos and videos across our social media pages, and beg for forgiveness if we are caught. Does dear Mr. New York State Representative Anthony Weiner have a comment to share on this?
Another group, the Westboro Baptist Church, based in Topeka, Kansas, are an example that brings to light the questions behind our freedom of speech. They are a “church” organization that travels to military funerals, disaster sites (Joplin, Missouri for example) and such, holding graphic signs with explicit messages, to showcase a belief system that these things are God’s wrath and punishment to us for our tolerance of homosexuality in this country. Again, right/wrong, good/bad, believe and don’t believe out of the equation…when are the basic freedoms and rights that we hold in America taken to far?
We have military out fighting for these rights that we hold true, but while they fight and struggle, and many lose their lives, some sit back and find a way to scam the system...we fight extremists all over the world. What about the extremists in our on backyards?
When have we taken things too far…?? Can we draw a line in the sand, or have our freedoms and rights driven us to buck the system, and use it to our own greedy benefits….
I’m not sure this question can ever have a definitive answer.
